The Need for Real-Time Disaster Recovery

In today’s business climate, the need to protect critical IT systems is no longer a nice-to-have; it’s a must-have. Providing a high level of data protection while keeping costs at a minimum can be a challenge for many organizations. Just ask Endocare,  an innovative medical device company, that lost their parent domain controller in July, 2007. The situation was a candid reminder that Endocare needed a real-time way to recover from a disaster.

Endocare solved their disaster recovery problems with two technology vendors, Double-Take Software and VMware, who provided virtualization solutions to consolidate and reduce hardware requirements to solve this exact business problem. VMware provides the virtualization platform while Double-Take Software provides the real-time data replication and recovery software. In this case, using virtualization with Double-Take Software allowed Endocare to implement a real-time disaster recovery solution that would otherwise be cost prohibitive in a non-virtual environment.

“We chose VMware Server and Double-Take because the solution allowed us to take realtime snap shots of the individual vmdk files and replicate them to another server for disaster recovery,” said David Avnaim, Director of IT at Endocare. “Doing so gives us the real-time data protection we were looking for (at a reasonable cost) as well as a quick and easy recovery process if another disaster should occur.”

Today, Endocare is protecting large vmdk (VMware) files with Double-Take, which ultimately protects all of their mission-critical business servers and applications. From there, Endocare uses tape to restore the data from the delta between when the vmdk copywas taken and the last good backup. This saves hours in not having to rebuild a server from scratch, running all the updates and patches, and reloading all the applications. “With VMware, protecting the vmdk file is critical,” said Avnaim. “As long as you have a good copy of a server’s vmdk file, you can bring that server back up in minutes. Double-Take can do this - even to an entirely different hardware platform!”
